Out of this world attendance

This year’s Uniacke Firefighters Fair was truly out of this world.

The theme for the annual event was outer space, and participants in the parade embraced the theme wholeheartedly as many donned alien costumes.

The 2018 Uniacke Firefighters’ Fair was held over two days, June 22-23 and Capt. Shawn Darby, of the Uniacke and District Volunteer Fire Department, said the beautiful weather brought out great crowds.

“The temperature was comfortable Friday night and we had incredibly clear skies for our fireworks display at dusk. All of the rides and food were a huge hit with the crowd,” he noted in an email following the event. Cheerleaders showed off their skills while participating in the 2018 Uniacke Firefighters Fair parade.

“We kicked off Saturday with a huge parade with many entrants... and then the fairgrounds were open for a few hours before crowds died off.”

Due to larger- than- expected crowd sizes, the fair’s canteen ran out of food and the volunteers had to restock.

“Based on prior years’ experience, we thought we had enough food to last for both menus, but ended up falling a bit short,” Darby wrote. “Our sincerest apologies to those who weren’t able to get their food or who had to wait while we picked up more items, but we can’t predict crowd size and our numbers were certainly up much higher than we expected.”

The fair featured something for all ages to enjoy, whether it was bingo, large inflatables, or rides, or the fireworks display or parade.

For the past 60-plus years, this event has served as a fundraiser for the fire department.

There were a variety of winners at the fair. Matthew Banfield won the draw for the White Point Resort package while Faye Pelrine won a pool party and Joyce Swinamer won a rug.

The dunk tank winner was Adam Mumford.

The colouring contest winners were Lexie Comeau, Taylor Smith, Brooklyn Everson, and Jamie Crossley.
