Acadia Axewomen open season with win against UPEI
The U SPORTS No. 10 ranked Acadia Axewomen rugby team opened the 2018 AUS rugby regular season with a 116-12 win over the visiting UPEI Panthers.
Second-year wing Bailey Dembicki added four tries to the Axewomen onslaught and was named the AUS Subway Player of the Game.
The Axewomen used speed and the entire field to gain an early 19-0 lead on the Panthers. Not until late in the opening half did UPEI finally register points off of a Brinten Comeau try and conversion by Frances McWilliam at the 36-minute mark of the half.
With a 66-7 lead at the half, the Axewomen continued to score with five unanswered tries. Janel MacKay added an unconverted try for the Panthers to cut the lead to 99-12.
Rookie Tori Hogan added a pair of tries and a conversion, while Dembicki added her fourth, and final, try to give the Axewomen a convincing win in front of a home crowd of nearly 400 fans.
The Axewomen take on the U SPORTS No. 2 ranked StFX XWomen on Sept. 22 in Antigonish. Both teams meet in the season finale Oct. 14 in Wolfville.
