Aca­dia Ax­e­women open sea­son with win against UPEI


The U SPORTS No. 10 ranked Aca­dia Ax­e­women rugby team opened the 2018 AUS rugby reg­u­lar sea­son with a 116-12 win over the vis­it­ing UPEI Pan­thers.

Sec­ond-year wing Bai­ley Dem­bicki added four tries to the Ax­e­women on­slaught and was named the AUS Sub­way Player of the Game.

The Ax­e­women used speed and the en­tire field to gain an early 19-0 lead on the Pan­thers. Not un­til late in the open­ing half did UPEI fi­nally reg­is­ter points off of a Brin­ten Comeau try and con­ver­sion by Frances McWilliam at the 36-minute mark of the half.

With a 66-7 lead at the half, the Ax­e­women con­tin­ued to score with five unan­swered tries. Janel MacKay added an un­con­verted try for the Pan­thers to cut the lead to 99-12.

Rookie Tori Ho­gan added a pair of tries and a con­ver­sion, while Dem­bicki added her fourth, and fi­nal, try to give the Ax­e­women a con­vinc­ing win in front of a home crowd of nearly 400 fans.

The Ax­e­women take on the U SPORTS No. 2 ranked StFX XWomen on Sept. 22 in Antigo­nish. Both teams meet in the sea­son fi­nale Oct. 14 in Wolfville.


The Aca­dia Ax­e­women started the sea­son off with a strong open­ing per­for­mance against UPEI.
