Val­ley High School Girls Hockey League sea­son opens

Ath­letes form­ing the Avon View Avalanche se­nior girls’ hockey team have one win un­der their belts to be­gin the 2018-19 Val­ley High School Girls’ Hockey League sea­son.

They up­ended Mid­dle­ton 3-1 at Hants Ex­hi­bi­tion Arena Oct 27.

Han­nah Ra­fuse scored in the first pe­riod be­fore the teams ex­changed goals in the sec­ond as Anna Hazel­wood tied the game at 1-1 on the pow­er­play for the An­napo­lis County-based school be­fore Ju­lia Fisher scored the game win­ner for the Avalanche.

Me­gan McCarthy added an in­surance marker for the Avalanche in the fi­nal frame.

Whether the Avalanche can win ev­ery league game this sea­son re­mains up in the air as they are com­ing off the 2017-18 sea­son with a per­fect 17-0-0 record.

The Avalanche were sched­uled to play in a tour­na­ment in Mid­dle­ton the week­end of Nov 3-4 and re­turn to reg­u­lar sea­son play when they travel to Hor­ton Nov. 10 for a 9 p.m. start in Kentville.

Hor­ton’s Griffins lost their open­ing game of the sea­son Oct. 26 to North­east Kings 4-0 as Ri­ley Ab­bott put on a scor­ing dis­play sec­ond to none.

Ab­bott scored all four goals for NKEC.
