Valley High School Girls Hockey League season opens
Athletes forming the Avon View Avalanche senior girls’ hockey team have one win under their belts to begin the 2018-19 Valley High School Girls’ Hockey League season.
They upended Middleton 3-1 at Hants Exhibition Arena Oct 27.
Hannah Rafuse scored in the first period before the teams exchanged goals in the second as Anna Hazelwood tied the game at 1-1 on the powerplay for the Annapolis County-based school before Julia Fisher scored the game winner for the Avalanche.
Megan McCarthy added an insurance marker for the Avalanche in the final frame.
Whether the Avalanche can win every league game this season remains up in the air as they are coming off the 2017-18 season with a perfect 17-0-0 record.
The Avalanche were scheduled to play in a tournament in Middleton the weekend of Nov 3-4 and return to regular season play when they travel to Horton Nov. 10 for a 9 p.m. start in Kentville.
Horton’s Griffins lost their opening game of the season Oct. 26 to Northeast Kings 4-0 as Riley Abbott put on a scoring display second to none.
Abbott scored all four goals for NKEC.
