Ethel Lil­lian

Lake - age 93, of Wolfville, passed away on Tues­day, Oc­to­ber 30, 2018 in the Wolfville Nurs­ing Home. Born on May 8, 1925 in Black River, she was a daugh­ter of the late Percy H. Atwell and Hilda (Jor­dan) Nowlin. Ethel was a vet­eran of the Sec­ond World War. She be­gan her ser­vice as a Lead­ing Air Woman - LAW with the Royal Cana­dian Air Force work­ing as a clerk. She was later em­ployed as a tele­phone op­er­a­tor with MT&T. In ad­di­tion to work­ing as a cashier at the High­land Can­teen she also looked af­ter the laun­dry, press­ing and starch­ing for the Wolfville Hol­land Bak­ery. Ethel ran the fam­ily busi­ness, or­ga­niz­ing and co­or­di­nat­ing de­liv­ery of

The Chron­i­cle Her­ald in one of the largest rec­og­nized mar­kets on the east coast and was a night porter in Sem­i­nary House at Aca­dia Univer­sity. She is sur­vived by daugh­ters, Sharon Lake (Richard Knott), Black River; Cather­ine (Lewis) How, Sunken Lake; Paula (Michael) Wat­son, West­ern Shore; Julie (Glenn) Hawkesworth, Black River; sons, Al (Eileen – de­ceased), Hal­i­fax; John (Joan), Greenwich; Carter, Wolfville Ridge; Marty, Toronto; Daniel, Wolfville; sis­ters, He­len Levy, Black River; Con­nie Hud­son, Tim­ber­lea; Dianne Allen, Las Ve­gas US; Joan Nowlin, Wolfville; Mar­i­lyn MacKen­zie, Hal­i­fax; 13 grand­chil­dren; 9 great-grand­chil­dren, many nieces and neph­ews. In ad­di­tion to her par­ents, she was pre­de­ceased by her hus­band, Harold; an in­fant son, Carver (Carter’s twin); two sis­ters, Jackie Clif­ford and Judi Atwell Munro; a brother, Wayne Nowlin; a daugh­ter-in-law, Eileen Lake; her step-fa­ther, Mor­ley Nowlin and her step-mother, Mil­dred (Jack­son) Atwell. There will be no visitation, by re­quest. A com­bined Royal Cana­dian Le­gion and fu­neral ser­vice, fol­lowed by a re­cep­tion, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tues­day, Novem­ber 6, 2018 in the White Fam­ily Fu­neral Home, Kentville, The Rev­erend Lewis How of­fi­ci­at­ing. Burial will take place in the Wil­low Bank Ceme­tery, Wolfville. Fam­ily flow­ers only, by re­quest. Do­na­tions in mem­ory may be made to the Black River Com­mu­nity Club or a char­ity of choice. Fu­neral ar­range­ments have been en­trusted to the White Fam­ily Fu­neral Home and Cre­ma­tion Ser­vices, Kentville.
