Apparently minor injury stalls Guerrero’s ascent
MANCHESTER, N.H. Any talk of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. being promoted within the Toronto Blue Jays organization is temporarily on hold as the 19-year-old superstar has suffered the first setback of his pro career.
The Jays’ double-A affiliate New Hampshire Fisher Cats have placed the third baseman on the seven-day disabled list as he recovers from what the organization believes is a minor injury.
“For us, it’s just about being extra cautious given that the injury occurred last Saturday and when he came back there was a little bit of a setback,” Jays director of player development Gil Kim told Postmedia before the Fisher Cats’ game against the Akron Rubberducks. “We’re just being extra cautious. It’s not expected to be anything serious.”
Guerrero, who is hitting a sensational .407 for the Fisher Cats to lead the Eastern League, was hurt over the weekend and then appeared as the designated hitter on Tuesday.
After hitting his second single of the game on Wednesday, however, Guerrero limped to first and was taken from the game after advancing to second.
The Jays are obviously being cautious with Guerrero, the most precious asset in the organization. They’ve been thrilled with his development and a promotion to triple-A Buffalo is likely in the cards at some point.
But with seven days to rest and recuperate, the immediate aim is to get the top-rated prospect in baseball back and feeling healthy.
