Pre­mier Doug Ford’s “buck a beer” chal­lenge mar­ked its of­fi­cial start Au­gust 27, but just three On­ta­rio’s bre­we­ries pi­cked up the gaunt­let and now it’s down to two af­ter the La­bour Day wee­kend. Lo­blaw’s Pre­sident’s Choice, and two small in­de­pendent bre­wers, Bar­ley Days and Co­ol Beer Bre­wing of­fe­red their beers at a dol­lar a can or bot­tle in re­turn for the pro­vin­cial go­vern­ment’s of­fer of pre­mium shelf space at the LCBO. But Lo­blaw’s has now de­ci­ded to step away from the chal­lenge. There is al­so just a li­mi­ted num­ber of LCBO out­lets sto­cking the dol­lar-a-beer brands. On­ta­rio’s craft bre­wers, in­clu­ding the four in Pres­cott-Rus­sell and the ma­jor bre­we­ries, have pas­sed on the chal­lenge be­cause they would lose mo­ney on eve­ry bot­tle or can pro­du­ced. - Gregg Cham­ber­lain
