Waterloo Region Record

LRT work will close portion of Frederick Street

WATERLOO REGION — Some roads will open and some will close next week as light rail construction continues in Waterloo Region this summer.

The biggest closure, Frederick Street from Weber to Charles streets, will start on Wednesday and last six weeks.

Work includes upgrading underground utilities and removal of asphalt, and access to local businesses will be maintained.

But have no fear because the intersection of Queen and Duke streets is expected to open the day before, allowing detour traffic to move through downtown from Weber to Queen to Courtland.

That intersection closed April 4 for an expected eight weeks, but the construction period was extended to July 26.

Wilson Avenue will close between Kingsway Drive and Fairway Road on Monday morning for six weeks.

GrandLinq, the consortium hired to build the light rail transit system, will install tracks, new curbs, asphalt and sidewalks along Wilson Avenue.

Access to Fairview Park mall and Shoppers Drug Mart will stay open from Fairway to Wilson during construction.

Wilson Avenue can be accessed from Weber through Franklin Street.
