BlackBerry claims victory in patent infringement suit
WATERLOO — BlackBerry says it has won a patent infringement lawsuit filed against it in the United States over technology related to two-way communication. The Waterloo-based smartphone maker said Friday a federal jury ruled in its favour in a patent infringement case brought by Mobile Telecommuncations (MTel). It said MTel originally claimed that BlackBerry infringed five patents. Before the trial in the U.S. District Court for the North District of Texas, the court found that two of the patents were directed to nonpatentable subject matter, that BlackBerry did not infringe one of the patents, and that one of the patents was indefinite. The remaining patent addressed in the lawsuit related to a two-way communication system for communication between a network and a mobile unit.
