Woman, 78, dead af­ter be­ing struck by turn­ing ve­hi­cle

A 78-year-old woman is dead af­ter be­ing hit by a ve­hi­cle while cross­ing Barrie Street at Churchill Drive on Fri­day af­ter­noon. Po­lice say the woman was walk­ing with her grand­son, on the south side of Churchill Drive, when they were struck by a sport util­ity ve­hi­cle turn­ing left onto Churchill. The vic­tims were both trans­ported to Cam­bridge Me­mo­rial hospi­tal, where the woman was pro­nounced dead. The 11-year-old boy was treated for mi­nor in­juries and has since been re­turned to his par­ents, po­lice say. Po­lice say the SUV was trav­el­ling west on Churchill Drive, stopped at a stop sign and turned left onto Barrie Street when the col­li­sion oc­curred. The ac­ci­dent hap­pened at about 1 p.m. Barrie Street was closed be­tween Churchill Drive and Cedar Street for sev­eral hours into the late af­ter­noon. Po­lice con­tinue to in­ves­ti­gate.
