Killing on Kenora Drive: Man, 22, stabbed

-

KITCHENER — The first homicide of 2018 took place early Sunday on a quiet residential street in the Stanley Park area, leaving a 22-year-old man dead and another 22-year-old man in custody.

Kenora Drive is normally a serene street intersected by the Dom Cardillo Trail and just a couple of blocks from River Road.

The weekend’s ice storm made the quiet street even more tranquil as snow and ice covered the road’s surface in thick rivers of slush.

At 12:05 a.m. Sunday, the peacefulness was shattered after Waterloo Regional Police responded to reports of an altercation at a residence.

Police say they found a male suffering from a stab wound. He was taken to hospital where he died — and the Kitchener street turned into a crime scene, as police cordoned off the area between both entrances of Parkview Crescent.

Kenora Drive remained closed until just after 3 p.m.

Police said their initial investigation suggested there was no risk to public safety — this was a targeted attack and the two individuals knew each other.

In 2017, Waterloo Region had five homicides: the killing of 57-year-old Elizabeth Alder on Falcon Drive in Elmira on Christmas Day; the killing of Bernard Joseph Gallant, 73, on King Street West in Kitchener on Oct. 19; the death of a man in his late 20s after a fight on Chandler Drive in Kitchener on Aug. 31; the stabbing death of 37-year-old Shamsul Alamshah on Mooregate Crescent in Kitchener on Aug. 27; and the killing of 22-yearold Melinda Vasilije on Country Hill Drive in Kitchener on April 28.

The man arrested in this latest homicide has not been identified, nor has the victim.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 519-5709777, ext. 8666, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
