Postal workers in New Hamburg stage strike

The rotating strikes orchestrat­ed by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers across the country came to New Hamburg on Wednesday. Postal services in the “608” area — which includes the city of Stratford and surroundin­g communitie­s — were shut down for the day. Strikes also began in Quebec City, Fredericto­n, Orangevill­e and Woodstock on Wednesday. New Hamburg workers started their strike at 5 a.m. outside the downtown location. The postal union is in the process of negotiatin­g a new collective bargaining deal with Canada Post which includes increased wages, job security and improved benefits. Since Oct. 22, the union has shut down operations in more than 100 communitie­s across the country for periods of no more than 48 hours at a time.
