Postal workers in New Hamburg stage strike
The rotating strikes orchestrated by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers across the country came to New Hamburg on Wednesday. Postal services in the “608” area — which includes the city of Stratford and surrounding communities — were shut down for the day. Strikes also began in Quebec City, Fredericton, Orangeville and Woodstock on Wednesday. New Hamburg workers started their strike at 5 a.m. outside the downtown location. The postal union is in the process of negotiating a new collective bargaining deal with Canada Post which includes increased wages, job security and improved benefits. Since Oct. 22, the union has shut down operations in more than 100 communities across the country for periods of no more than 48 hours at a time.
