FROM ASHLEY: Andrew popped the question during one of our favourite winter activities: skating. Sipping hot chocolate with a drop or two of Baileys and testing the twirlability of Toronto’s ice rinks had become our favourite way to spend the winter so it was an obvious choice for the proposal. In true Canadian fashion, the day was a notch or two colder than the teeth-chattering temp already promised. Andrew dropped to one knee while lacing my skates up at the rink. I said yes before helping Andrew put his gloves back on his numb, shaking hands. We always knew we wanted to get married by the sea. Andrew whisked me away to Cape Cod for my birthday a couple of years ago and it’s been a special place ever since. We both love the Cape for its unpretentious charm and natural beauty, so it felt like the perfect place to exchange our vows. We wanted to feel like we were getting married inside of a Colville painting. Our shared love of the ocean guided a cool palette of blue and white, accented with a hint of blush and a pop of peony pink. To tie in the colour scheme, the groomsmen wore handsome navy suiting and luggage-brown brogues; the bridesmaids wore blush, cloud grey, and pale blue. Décor was kept to a minimum: we didn’t want the look to swing in the direction of nautical, as we felt that would read as too literal. Instead we highlighted the colonial design of the home, the sea in view and patterns like gingham. We went to every effort of making each detail personal to us by adding our own touches. Seeing 30 of our impeccably dressed guests tugging at lobster claws while wearing plastic bibs was unforgettable. Many of them were getting their first taste of seafood from the Cape. As we sat down to dinner, we raised a glass of ‘Sophia’ Coppola Champagne to our intimate group of family and friends. We made a toast and had a moment of absolute gratitude as we looked out at the tables of people who had travelled far and wide to be with us on Thanksgiving weekend.
