We go behind the scenes at Monique Lhuillier’s Spring 2018 runway show in New York.

Ever wonder what inspires bridal designers to create those glorious gowns? We went #BTS with Monique Lhuillier as her Spring 2018 lineup hit the runway to get a glimpse into her creative consciousness.

The scene backstage at Monique Lhuillier’s Spring 2018 show is pure fashion chaos, as expected. Backstage at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Room models zip between hair, makeup, nails and the final dressing area where Lhuillier’s latest breathtaking collection hangs.

The petite and chic designer is in the midst of everything, directing her design team to make any last minute tweaks to the gowns to ensure every little intricate detail is perfect. Surrounded by clouds of ivory and blush tulle, embroidered lace and dazzling chandelier bolero jackets made from miles of pearls and crystals (these were a huge hit at the show), Lhuillier and I chat about the inspiration behind this collection. She tells me for this season, it was all about bringing back classic elegance and tradition

“This collection has a lot of dramatic fabrics like simplified silk satins, exploding skirts with tons of volume, and the designs throw back to more classic shapes and silhouettes,” Lhuillier says. “With my ready-to-wear line, my client is extremely fashion forward, but for her wedding day she wants to wear something that’s timeless, elegant and traditional with a twist.”

Lhuillier says it was also important her collection include toppers like the dazzling boleros and capelets for brides looking for coverage during the wedding ceremony. Delicate tulle gloves were her other chosen runway accessory adding a retro twist. Complementing the fashion vibe was a beauty look that was soft, simple and feminine— right down to the fingertips—with models exclusively wearing shades from Lhuillier’s bridal-themed Essie Gel Couture collection.

“This was such a fun collaboration and made sense for me to do because it’s my way of taking away one more thing my bride has to think about,” Lhuillier says. “I created six shades ranging from soft pink to sparkly white, rose gold, sage green and deep berry, and they complement our entire bridal lineup.”

When asked what makes a for a bride’s perfect dress, her answer is short, succinct and absolutely on point: “One that makes her feel the most beautiful…EVER!”

CaPtion.
