FROM JOANNA: Our colourful, island themed wedding stemmed from wanting the event in Hawaii. Since we couldn’t do that, we wanted the wedding to be very festive and vibrant. I handmade all the decor, including the tasselled garlands strung across the room, the ceremony arch, flags for the parade and all the photo booth props and backdrop. I also created the menu packets and my own bouquet. We paraded the family and bridal party from our condo to The Richmond venue. Family came from Hong Kong and Vancouver, so it was a great way to show them around the city. We chose a Kamayan-style dinner for the reception. It included food from both of our backgrounds—Chinese roasted pork from mine and jerk chicken from Nicholas’s — which was placed on banana leaves in front of the guests. We wanted to incorporate both cultures into the wedding. Nicholas is from Trinidad and his cousin, Dana, is a dancehall teacher. Right before everyone started dancing for the night, we got all the guests onto the dance floor where Dana taught several dancehall moves. This helped everyone warm up to dance all night long!
