DINING

Where Calgary - - CONTENTS -

A new food festival comes to Calgary; a place for pie lovers.

Our long-time Hot Dining contributor—and one of the most well-known and respected food critics in Calgary—John Gilchrist is retiring. So, we bring you a final recommendation from John: his pick for the best restaurant in Calgary is Rouge for its “historic setting, huge yard, fine service, and fabulous, contemporary localseasonal cuisine.” It’s especially delightful to visit in the summer when the yard is in full bloom and ingredients are picked right from the garden (page 61).

Savoury pie for dinner, or sweet pie for dessert? At Pie Cloud, the answer is a resounding “both.” The savoury menu list includes masterpieces such as the Turkey Dinner Pie, with a bottom crust of stuffing layered with veggies, gravy, and chunks of turkey topped with mashed potatoes, or the gooey, creamy Mac and Cheese Pie, baked into a flaky pastry crust and garnished with a bacon lattice. On the sweet side you’ll find classic favourites with a few surprises. Try the Luscious Lime Pie with a gingersnap crust, or the sublime Marshmallow Mermaid Pie with tart orange curd, blue Curacao liqueur, and topped with marshmallow whip. If you’re not in the mood for pie there’s a “Not Pie” menu with comfort food including Meatloaf Mash, Chicken ‘n Waffles, and a full breakfast (page 60). —R.F.
