1. THE PALACE THEATRE

After nearly a decade under the moniker Flames Central, the historic building is returning to its original name but keeping its purpose as a rollicking music venue. DATSIK (page 33), The Tea Party (page 33), and Prozzäk (page 33) are some of the acts that will grace the stage in March and April.

2. PALOMINO SMOKEHOUSE

The Pal, as it’s affectionately called, is known for two things: tantalizing smoked meat upstairs, and eclectic live music downstairs. The Western vibe here is genuine and year-round, not just put on at Stampede time. 109 - 7 Ave SW, 403-532-1911, thepalomino.ca

3. ARTS COMMONS

With more than 1,800 performances and events per year hosted within its walls, Arts Commons is firmly situated at the centre of Calgary’s performing arts world. Though it regularly hosts renowned jazz, blues, and world music concert series, every genre has its place in Arts Commons. 205 - 8 Ave SE, 403-294-9494, artscommons.ca

4. STUDIO BELL

This eye-popping building is home to the National Music Centre. Here you’ll find exhibitions on the history and contemporary practice of music in Canada, plus an intimate theatre for concerts. 850 - 4 St SE, 403-543-5115, nmc.ca

5. HEAR’S MY SOUL CAFÉ

A two-storey indie café with a funky vibe, it hosts regular live music, comedy, and art shows. In addition to coffee and a small menu, it’s licensed for alcohol. 535 - 8 Ave SE, 587-350-2200.

6. BLUES CAN

Live music can be heard every day of the week here, from big names to local crooners. The dark, intimate atmosphere

and great acoustics are perfect for singing the blues, and there’s a full menu of Southern-inspired, stick-to-your-ribs food. 1429 - 9 Ave SE, 403-262-2666, thebluescan.ca

7. IRONWOOD STAGE AND GRILL

This all-ages venue hosts everything from rap to children’s music, though the main focus is on folk. Seating is shared, so you could wind up sitting with “friends you haven’t met yet.” 1229 - 9 Ave SE, 403-269-5581, ironwoodstage.ca

8. LOLITA’S LOUNGE

While jazz and other live music are regular staples at the vintage, 1940s-inspired Lolita’s Lounge, it is by far best known for the insanely popular drag show Carly’s Angels on most Saturdays. Booking in advance is a must for this riotous performance! 1413 - 9 Ave SE, 403-265-5739, lolitaslounge.ca
