ASK THE EXPERT
1. Where is your favourite place to go in Calgary for live music?
I really love The Nash and Off Cut Bar (page 46) on Thursday nights. The menu offerings and cocktail program are fantastic and they always have great local performers playing in a real cozy atmosphere. Otherwise the Blues Can (page 44) and Wine-Oh’s (page 49) are always hosting fresh Alberta and international talent.
2. Where do you recommend going for a pint on St. Patrick's Day?
James Joyce (page 45) on Stephen Avenue is my favorite. They offer great food and always have good Celtic tunes playing to get you into the Irish spirit. The fact that they don’t have TVs really makes your celebrating more focused on the music and conversation.
3. Where would you recommend shopping for a new spring outfit?
I always love recommending our guests venture to Inglewood. There is a great selection of local boutique shops like Espy Experience (page 39), Lauren Bagliore’s Concept Shop (page 40) and really some cool vintage clothing stores where you can find some real old school gems.
4. Which new restaurants would you recommend trying?
Bar Von Der Fels (page 49) is a small 28seat wine bar where they are always pouring unique, hard-to-find wines by the glass and the food is fabulous. Bridgette Bar (page 46) has an excellent food menu, very fresh décor, and a really vibrant atmosphere. They have a great brunch menu on Sundays as well!
5. Where would you recommend spending a rainy spring day?
Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre (page 30). With the unique architecture of the facility and engaging, educational exhibits promoting the history of music in Canada, you will quickly forget about the weather and really learn to appreciate the wonderful history of Canadian music.
