Snow­shoe or ski tour to th­ese rus­tic, log-built wilder­ness cab­ins that serve home-cooked meals and of­fer ac­cess to many trails. Reser­va­tions are a must. • Skoki Lodge, built by lo­cal res­i­dents in 1931, is 11 km from the Lake Louise Ski Re­sort (403-522-1347) over Boul­der and De­cep­tion moun­tain passes. • Her­itage Tourism Award-win­ning Brew­ster’s Shadow Lake Lodge (403-762-0116), built in 1928 and ac­cessed by 14-km Re­dearth Creek trail, is west of Banff. Day vis­i­tors can drop in for af­ter­noon tea Thurs­days to Satur­days, Fe­bru­ary 5 to March 12 (call ahead). • Banff Sun­dance Lodge (403-762-4551) has so­lar power and show­ers. A new bridge and trail restora­tion (af­ter the 2013 flood) has re­stored ac­cess via a 10.5-km route from Healy Creek trail­head. –Afton Aikens & Jack Wen­not
