“cana­dian sol­diers be­gan us­ing the mercedes-benz Ge­landewa­gen (or G-Wa­gen) on pa­trols in afghanistan in 2004, re­plac­ing their ag­ing iltis ve­hi­cles. the tal­iban at­tacked this ve­hi­cle with their sig­na­ture weapon, the im­pro­vised ex­plo­sive de­vice (ied) on dec. 12, 2005. it was one of the first ve­hi­cles to be tar­geted with an ied in Kan­da­har. the sol­diers within sur­vived, saved by the ar­mour fit­ted to the ve­hi­cle, but many more, of­ten fa­tal ied at­tacks fol­lowed. this led to the in­tro­duc­tion of main bat­tle tanks and he­li­copters into the cana­dian area of op­er­a­tions.”
