MUSIC AND BEYOND
July 4 to 17
Scene Setter: It’s all in the name. Beyond. This classical music and multi-disciplinary arts festival melds music with everything from visual art and comedy to yoga. With 85 concerts, big and small, the 2017 edition honours Canada’s 150th with five concerts that explore our nation’s music since 1867.
Seen and Heard: The primary venues are downtown churches and concert halls, so you can escape the summer heat with a sonic and visual treat. Standout shows include the Canadian Brass (July 7), a tribute to 400 Years of Opera (July 6), Beyond the Bomb: Music of the Cold War at The Diefenbunker (July 8), and A Silent Night – A WWI Memorial in Song (July 9) at Beechwood, Canada’s National Cemetery. Violinist Sarah Chang will play her string – while pulling yours — at the Opening Gala (July 4).
