a GooD yarn

Wabi Sabi prides itself on being a favourite for enthusiasts of knitting, spinning, weaving, and the popular “wet felting.” The name of the fibre store, a Japanese term for the acceptance of imperfection and transience, encourages knitters of any skill level to try their hand. All threads are natural and eco-friendly, and many are made locally. 1078 Wellington St. W., wabi-sabi.ca

VeGan treats

Poptarts, ice cream sandwiches, pizza, handpies — you name it, Little Jo Berry’s Coffee & Eats has it. All its snacks and meals are free of dairy and eggs, and really big on variety and colour. 1305 Wellington St. W., littlejoberrys.com

local FaVourite

Modern Canadian comfort food is The Wellington Gastropub’s specialty. They change their menu daily based on what’s in season — having done so for over 10 years, they are pros at this challenging daily change. They also feature a well-crafted drinks menu and host a monthly record club. 1325 Wellington St. W., thewellingtongastropub.com

cat sanctuary

A great way to enjoy a latte is with the companionship of rescued cats. The Feline Café supports a foster and adoption operation, so feel good about ordering an organic tea, vegan dishes, or baked goods. You can bring food into the public cat lounge, but keep the kitties from taking nibbles. 1076 Wellington St. W., felinecafeottawa.com

coFFee & Flowers

Blumenstudio feels like a private greenhouse, with a myriad of shelves and tables covered in planters and cut flowers. The owner changes her floral wares each season but her coffees remain consistent. She serves a great Americano with only one or two ounces of water, and claims to be the first in Ottawa to pour cortados: half espresso, half steamed milk. 465 Parkdale Ave., blumenstudio.ca
