Canadian identity—the theme for this year’s city-wide Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival—is a complicated topic. Artist and recent New Yorker profile subject Petra Collins gives her take in the form of sun-soaked portraits that tug at the tension between adolescence and adulthood. Her pictures show girls languishing on their beds or looking away from the camera, as if they’re secretly cursing unseen enemies.

Anna and Kathleen (Rainbow) by Petra Collins, one of 1,500 photographers featured in 200 exhibitions at the festival.
