If you’re con­sid­er­ing ven­tur­ing out of bounds, proper ed­u­ca­tion is an es­sen­tial tool for ex­plor­ing un­tamed back­coun­try ter­rain. For those hear­ing the call of dis­tant moun­tains, Whistler Black­comb’s free half-day, in­tro­duc­tory-level avalanche aware­ness cour­ses are a great place to start train­ing. Hosted by WB’s ski pa­trol team, the tours pro­vide key in­for­ma­tion about safe travel, ter­rain eval­u­a­tion, avalanche phe­nom­e­non, con­trol mea­sures, safety equip­ment and res­cue tech­niques. Avalanche aware­ness tours are held daily at 12:30 pm, and take ap­prox­i­mately 2.5 hours. Tours be­gin at the avalanche hut at the top of So­lar Coaster Ex­press chair­lift on Black­comb Moun­tain.
