Wiarton’s 2016 Rotarian of the Year ‘a man of many talents’

Wiarton Echo - - NEWS -

Gay Ratcliffe, a director of the Rotary Club of Wiarton, presented Maldwyn Williams with the Rotarian of the Year 2016 award at Walker House in Southampton, Dec. 1.

In keeping with tradition, the award was given at the Rotarians’ annual Christmas party.

In a comment on the club’s Facebook page, Ratcliffe described Williams as “a man of many talents.”

Williams has been an “invaluable member” of the Rotary since 1998, Ratcliffe said, adding he had served on its executive many times over the years in many capacities, including as treasurer and – in 2006 – as president.

Williams applied his Master’s Degree in Social Housing from the University of Illinois and his experience as a professional architect as a volunteer during the sixyear build of The Miracle Place. The Miracle Place, a six-unit affordable housing project at Charles and Isaac Streets in Wiarton, opened in 2011.

Williams was its first chairperson, a position he held until his retirement in 2016.

“He still drops in to help with their maintenance,” Ratcliffe said.

The Rotary’s annual Village Fair also benefitted from William’s skills.

“He lives at the fair from morning to night and as in the club business, he was always the person to go to, to problem solve,” Ratcliffe said.
