A fundraiser will be held to support local championship skier, Julian Smith, at Sawmill Trails in Hepworth, Feb. 18.

A hot soup lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on site or available as takeaway. The cost is by donation with all monies raised contributing to Smith’s travel costs as he represents Canada in the Intercontinental Cup, the B Tour, in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Smith started skiing Jack Rabbits when he was five years old. His love of the outdoors and encouragement of the local ski community saw him achieve many local, provincial and national medals in Nordic skiing as he skied for both West Hill Secondary School and Georgian Bay Nordic.

He is currently in Europe, having recently returned from competing

n at the World Junior Championships in Utah.

Smith is in his third year at the National Development Centre in Thunder Bay Ontario.

When Smith is home in the spring he speaks to elementary students about goal setting, overcoming adversity and living a wonderful life.
