The movie belongs to (Jennifer) Hudson as the proud, self-destructive Effie. When she’s centre stage, Dreamgirls transports you to movie musical heaven. — David Ansen, Newsweek

When she sings And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going — one of the most heartfelt cries of pain ever written for a musical — As much as I enjoyed the sheer brassiness and emotion and bigness of this production, as much as I appreciated the performances from the terrifically talented cast — I didn’t love the movie. The breathtakingly gorgeous Beyonce Knowles stars as Deena, who replaces the more vocally and more physically robust Effie (Jennifer Hudson) as lead singer of a ’60s R&B crossover group. Jamie Foxx is the aspiring talent manager who recruits the girls to sing backup for the lascivious Jimmy “Thunder” Early (Eddie Murphy). Just a little too slick and over the top for its own good. — Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times
