Panthers gain berth into OHL Cup
The Sun County Panthers are headed to the main tournament draw of the OHL Cup.
The Panthers, who have not played in the tournament since 2012, won a wild-card game Tuesday to gain entry into the main tournament.
Braedan Caetano scored twice and Ryan Gagnier, who was named the team’s player of the game, added a goal and three assists as the Panthers beat the Toronto Titans 5-2 at Scotiabank Pond in North York. Conor Dembinski and John Ulicny added single goals for the Panthers, who got 42 saves from goalie Nicholas Chenard.
Sun County plays Wednesday against Cambridge.
SKATERS AT PROVINCIALS
Three members of the Riverside Skating Club are headed to the Skate Ontario Championships in Kingston, which run Friday through Sunday. Eleven-year-olds Julia Young and Kayleigh-Jayne Powney Ware will be competing in the STAR5 under-13 girls division, while nine-year-old Serena Zhang will compete in the STAR5 under-10 girls division.
The Skate Ontario Championships bring the top 18 skaters in each category to the provincial championships.
HUMMELL TO REPRESENT ONTARIO
Winstars’ Michael Hummell has been named to the Ontario MAG (men’s artistic gymnastic) Tour Team.
A strong 2017-18 season was key to the 14-year-old Hummell, who is from LaSalle, being named to the team.
Hummell, who is a Level 3 artistic gymnast, finished first at an Ontario Cup qualifier in Ottawa, finished second at another competition in Kitchener and third at a competition in St. Catharines. So far this season, Hummell has been awarded six gold medals and three silver medals. He will head to Calgary with Team Ontario to compete March 22-26.
The University of Windsor Lancers Kelsey Balkwill was named OUA female athlete of the week on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old Balkwill, who is an Essex high school product, helped the Lancers to a bronzemedal finish at the U Sports track and field championships.
CANADIENS TAKE TITLE
The Lakeshore Canadiens captured the Bill Stobbs Division title in the Provincial Junior Hockey League on Tuesday. The top-seeded Canadiens beat the defending champion Essex 73’s 3-1 to take the best-of-seven series 4-1. Connor Rosaasen scored twice and Jarrett Tazzman had the other goal for the Canadiens while Riley Meyerink replied for the 73’s.
