Hen­der­son shares lead at LPGA tour­ney

Brooke Hen­der­son of Smiths Falls, Ont. shot a bo­geyfree 5-un­der 66 on Fri­day to move into a tie for the lead af­ter two rounds at the Marathon Clas­sic. The 20-year-old Cana­dian and Caro­line Hed­wall of Swe­den were at 9-un­der 133 through 36 holes. Thi­dapa Suwan­na­pura was one shot back. Hen­der­son and Hed­wall each birdied the fi­nal two holes at High­land Mead­ows, both par 5s. The 29-year-old Hed­wall is look­ing for her first LPGA Tour vic­tory. Hen­der­son won ear­lier this sea­son in Hawaii, the sixth vic­tory of her ca­reer.

De­fend­ing cham­pion I.K. Kim was three strokes be­hind. Brit­tany Marc­hand of Orangeville, Ont. is tied for 16th at 4-un­der 138 af­ter Fri­day’s ac­tion while Alena Sharp of Hamilton is tied for 54th at even par 142. MaudeAimee LeBlanc of Sher­brooke missed the cut. Mean­while at the PGA’s John Deere Clas­sic in Silvis, Ill., David Hearn of Brant­ford, Ont. was in a three-way tie for sec­ond with Amer­i­cans Steve Wheatcroft and John­son Wag­ner af­ter shoot­ing a 7-un­der 64 on Fri­day. Hearn shot a 66 on open­ing day and is sit­ting at 12-un­der 130 af­ter two rounds.

Amer­i­can Michael Kim had the 36-hole lead at 16-un­der. Other Cana­di­ans in the field in­clude: Nick Tay­lor of Ab­bots­ford, B.C., who is tied for 16th at 7-un­der 135; Macken­zie Hughes of Hamilton who is tied for 35th at 5-un­der 137; and Corey Con­ners of Lis­towel, Ont., who is tied for 47th at 4-un­der 138.

At the Con­stel­la­tion Se­nior Play­ers cham­pi­onship in High­land Park, Ill., Scott Parel grabbed a one-stroke lead af­ter shoot­ing a 6-un­der-par 66 in Fri­day ’s sec­ond round to reach 11 un­der.

Rod Spit­tle of Ni­a­gara Falls, Ont., is the top Cana­dian at 5 un­der. Cal­gary’s Stephen Ames is at even par.
