Henderson shares lead at LPGA tourney
Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont. shot a bogeyfree 5-under 66 on Friday to move into a tie for the lead after two rounds at the Marathon Classic. The 20-year-old Canadian and Caroline Hedwall of Sweden were at 9-under 133 through 36 holes. Thidapa Suwannapura was one shot back. Henderson and Hedwall each birdied the final two holes at Highland Meadows, both par 5s. The 29-year-old Hedwall is looking for her first LPGA Tour victory. Henderson won earlier this season in Hawaii, the sixth victory of her career.
Defending champion I.K. Kim was three strokes behind. Brittany Marchand of Orangeville, Ont. is tied for 16th at 4-under 138 after Friday’s action while Alena Sharp of Hamilton is tied for 54th at even par 142. MaudeAimee LeBlanc of Sherbrooke missed the cut. Meanwhile at the PGA’s John Deere Classic in Silvis, Ill., David Hearn of Brantford, Ont. was in a three-way tie for second with Americans Steve Wheatcroft and Johnson Wagner after shooting a 7-under 64 on Friday. Hearn shot a 66 on opening day and is sitting at 12-under 130 after two rounds.
American Michael Kim had the 36-hole lead at 16-under. Other Canadians in the field include: Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., who is tied for 16th at 7-under 135; Mackenzie Hughes of Hamilton who is tied for 35th at 5-under 137; and Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont., who is tied for 47th at 4-under 138.
At the Constellation Senior Players championship in Highland Park, Ill., Scott Parel grabbed a one-stroke lead after shooting a 6-under-par 66 in Friday ’s second round to reach 11 under.
Rod Spittle of Niagara Falls, Ont., is the top Canadian at 5 under. Calgary’s Stephen Ames is at even par.
