Newcomers show their gratitude

-

Meagan Klassen is a teacher in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program based out of the Alternative, Adult and Continuing Education Program located at the Mason Centre.

Just prior to Remembrance Day, Mrs. Klassen incorporated lessons on the topic as an important reminder of the ultimate sacrifice our veterans paid to protect democracy both in Canada and around the world.

With Meaghen's entire class made up of newcomers and refugees, the group expressed disappointment that due to COVID-19 protocols they were unable to donate to the annual poppy campaign as they usually do at the main office in the school.

Feeling compelled to give back, the class of 15 delved into their own pockets and contributed over $100 so they could deliver the funds themselves to the Royal Canadian Legion.

Although students do not attend class on Wednesdays, they were still able to participate virtually in Remembrance Day activities provided on television.

Some of Meaghen's students can relate to the horrors of war first-hand and came to Canada as a safe haven for survival and a better life leading to opportunities unthinkable in their homeland. There isn't any doubt that their appreciation and gratitude may go as deep as any native-born Canadian.

Amid a pandemic and a historic U.S. election that divided many, this class is the very definition of what makes us Canadian.

What brings us together is our shared values on humanity, love and respect among a diverse nation. Thank you to Meaghen and to the students of the ESL program at the AACE-MASON Centre for reinforcing this valuable message.
