DEALER OF THE WEEK
Funks Toyota matched all the donations that came in to the dealership.”
With the acquisition at the beginning of December of the Todosichuk family’s Todd Chrysler stores in Swan River in western Manitoba and Kamsack in eastern Saskatchewan, Greg and Tasha Ashauer have realized their long-held dream of outright ownership of their own dealership.
The deal also goes against recent trends in that the buyers are not part of an auto group.
The Ashauers are longtime car people. Ashauer is a second-generation car guy from Calgary. He started selling cars out of high school at a Ford dealership in Fairview in northern Alberta. After three years, he had an opportunity to move south to Red Deer where he worked at a Toyota and Honda dealership for 10 years.
His first management position was at a Chrysler store in Kelowna. After six years there, he was offered a general manager’s position at a Ford dealership in Meadow Lake.
“I ran that store successfully for just under three years before we got this opportunity to buy the Todd Chrysler dealerships in Kamsack and Swan River,” he says.
Tasha is from Surrey, B.C. She met Greg when both were working at the Toyota store in Red Deer. She also spent five years at a BMW dealership in Kelowna.
“She’s always been in the shop side of the business,” Ashauer says of his wife. Tasha started driving the service shuttle and then moved up to warranty administrator, service adviser and finally service manager.
“When we got the approval from Chrysler to buy these two stores at Kamsack and Swan River, the company said that we were the only husband-and-wife operators of a franchise store in their entire franchise portfolio,” Ashauer says.
The couple plans to continue doing business under the name of Redline Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Ltd.
“We purchased everything except the RV portion of Warren Todd’s RV business,” Ashauer says.
Al Todosichuk acquired the location that became Todd Plymouth Chrysler and Dodge Trucks in Kamsack in 1978. His son, Warren, who had moved back to Kamsack from Alberta, joined the business in 1977.
The Todosichuks acquired the Swan River outlet in 1999 and then took on RVs and expanded the property in 2006.
Todd Enterprises had employed 13 people in Kamsack full-time, and 10 full-time staff in Swan River. Ashauer estimates the business, at both locations, will employ 27 people.
