uses aluminum more extensively than before in the chassis. The previous MX-5 had an aluminum hood, trunk lid, centre frame brace and suspension arms. The new MX-5 also has aluminum front fenders, convertibletop supports, rear bulkhead and roll hoops, and front and rear bumper supports. Reconfiguring the interior by raising the doors and lowering the seats has created a sense of more room.

The 2016 MX-5 is powered by a twolitre DOHC 16-valve Atkinson-capable inline-4 direct fuel injection — using Mazda’s patented SKYACTIV technology — that produces 155 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque.

The new model has been a hit with Mazda fans. “We only have two MX-5 models on the lot,” said Hallock.

“We have had a lot of people come in for a look and a test drive.”

Sales rep ropes cattle Mid-Town Ford sales rep Brad Middleton has two passions in life: selling vehicles and roping cattle. He has been roping cattle on the Manitoba rodeo circuit for 30 years and selling cars almost as long.

“I was born and raised on the farm near Carman,” he said. “I have been around cattle and horses my whole life.”

Middleton participates in about 15 rodeos each year with the Heartland Rodeo Association and is president of the Carman Rodeo Committee. His specialty is roping — as a heeler. “My partner — either Mitch Rouier or Murray Martens — ropes the horns while I rope the back legs,” said Middleton. “There are as many as 100 teams competing; we finished fifth last season.”

Middleton’s most recent event was in mid-October, when he competed in the Grandpa Dean Memorial — named in honour of his late father — at Carman.

He also hosts an annual fundraising steak and lobster dinner with his wife, Trish, and other family members at their ranch every summer.

“We had about 350 people for supper last year,” he said. “We raise money for the Children’s Hospital and Children’s Wish Foundation.

“We have raised over $100,000 for the cause.”

Gerry Gordon Mazda sales representative Dave Hallock says the new MX-5 is all about the thrill of the ride.
