Mild fall means we can put fashion before function with glamorous outerwear accessories
IF you would have told me at the beginning of the year I would still be able to sport just a sweater during the day in November, I would have thought you were insane. But, here we are, nearly mid-November and I can count on two hands the number of days where my outfit hasn’t been covered up by a coat. Actually, last weekend there were several gals out there still baring a little leg in capris, and many more boldly refusing to stash away those sexy summer shoes. But let’s be honest: as the sun begins to fade into night, it gets pretty darn chilly out there. Not so cold you need to break out the winter woollies but not warm enough to rely only on a thin pashmina — it’s that kinda in-between weather.
For this fashionista, having an actual fall that lasts more than a couple of weeks had me on the prowl for fabulous autumn accoutrements that would keep you cosy at night while remaining coolly stylish. (Finally, a time in Winnipeg’s fall/winter season where function does not outweigh fashion!)
Over at Edward Carriere’s main-level gift boutique, Downstairs, you will find some of the finest fall outerwear of the season: beautiful wraps and scarves, funky hats and hoods and luxurious leather gloves.
Among the items at the boutique are a very luxe collection of alpaca wool wraps that have this sort of silky texture and drape elegantly on the body. What I love about these is the fact that you can envelop yourself in them to stave off the chilly night air or wear them loosely wrapped once around the neck during the day as a fun accessory.
For those looking for something a bit warmer but still ultra cool, opt for a mohair knitted scarf by Montreal designer M0851 in a gorgeous jewel-tone hue, teamed up with a cashmere slouchy hat by Olena Zylak.
But if you ask me, the most to-die-for way to stay cosy on a chilly autumn night is with a pair of the softest leather gloves. Downstairs carries a gorgeous line from France with lovely details such as stitchwork patterns — ooh la la.
So go ahead — splurge on a little piece of luxury. After all, it’s not every year we ’Peggers have the opportunity to celebrate fall in style.
