Fans choose Ed­wards for song­writ­ing award

ON­LINE fans have voted and Ot­tawa roots-rocker Kath­leen Ed­wards and co-writer John Rod­er­ick are the win­ners of the 2012 SOCAN Echo Song­writ­ing award.

The duo re­ceive a $5,000 prize for their song, A Soft Place to Land, beat­ing out four other nom­i­nees.

A record 16,804 pub­lic votes — a 34 per cent in­crease over last year — were sub­mit­ted on­line for the English and French song­writ­ing prizes, handed out an­nu­ally to in­de­pen­dent Cana­dian artist. Fans could cast one vote daily be­tween Sept. 10 and Oct. 10.

Win­nipeg­ger John K. Sam­son was among the five English nom­i­nees, earn­ing a nod for his song When I Write My Mas­ter’s The­sis.

The French win­ner was Ko­ri­ass for the song St-Eus­tache.
