Bez­mozgis among guests at Tar­but cul­ture fes­ti­val

THE riches of con­tem­po­rary Jewish arts, mu­sic and per­for­mance will be show­cased in Tar­but: Fes­ti­val of Jewish Cul­ture at the Rady Jewish Community Cen­tre, Nov. 17-25.

Guests on this year’s lineup in­clude au­thor David Bez­mozgis ( The Free World), comedian Rachel Fe­in­stein ( Last Comic Stand­ing), the Hadar Noiberg Mid­dle Eastern Jazz Trio, Ye­men Blues, and a Rockin’ Chanukah Concert fea­tur­ing en­ter­tainer Rick Recht.

Lo­cal tal­ent in­cludes Glenn Buhr’s Bro­ken Songs Band per­form­ing Be­fore and Af­ter Grace­land: A Trib­ute to Paul Si­mon. For­mer Win­nipeg­ger Sandy Krawchenko Alt­ner presents mu­sic and mem­o­ries of the early days in Win­nipeg’s North End with her pro­gram Fid­dler in the Golden Land, in­spired by her best­selling book Raven­scraig.

The fes­ti­val also in­cludes two film screen­ings: Hava Nag­ila: The Movie and Lit­tle Rose ( Ró­ey­czka).

“From visual arts, to mu­sic to lit­er­a­ture and films we are thrilled to have the op­por­tu­nity to show­case the in­cred­i­ble artis­tic tal­ents found in our community and be­yond at Tar­but”, fes­ti­val di­rec­tor Ta­mar Barr says. “We are so pleased that we have been able to pro­gram a week that con­tains such high-cal­i­bre en­ter­tain­ment for our au­di­ences.”

Last year’s Tar­but Fes­ti­val at­tracted more than 3,000 peo­ple. The suc­cess of last’s year’s visual arts com­po­nent prompted a new ex­hibit of Win­nipeg Jewish artists, in­clud­ing Caro­line Dukes, Leonard Mar­coe, Shoshana Shalev-Minuk, and Elana El. This ex­hibit will cul­mi­nate with a dis­cus­sion en­ti­tled “Jewish Art or Art made by Jews?” by cu­ra­tor Amy Kar­lin­sky and a silent auc­tion with pro­ceeds to the Rady JCC.
