WSO hires new res­i­dent con­duc­tor

THE Win­nipeg Sym­phony Orches­tra will have a new res­i­dent con­duc­tor for the 2013-14 sea­son.

Ju­lian Pel­li­cano will take over the ba­ton for Richard Lee, who has re­cently been named mu­sic di­rec­tor of the East Texas Sym­phony Orches­tra in Tyler, Texas.

Dur­ing the 2012-13 sea­son, Lee had been split­ting his time be­tween East Texas, the WSO, Toronto’s Korean Cana­dian Sym­phony Orches­tra and the Univer­sity of Man­i­toba Sym­phony Orches­tra.

Pel­li­cano has stud­ied mu­sic at the Pe­abody Con­ser­va­tory, the Royal Col­lege of Mu­sic in Stock­holm, earned his masters of mu­sic in per­cus­sion from the Yale School of Mu­sic, where he also did his masters in or­ches­tral con­duct­ing.

He had been on the fac­ulty of the con­ser­va­tory Longy School of Mu­sic in Cam­bridge, Mass., and was the prin­ci­pal con­duc­tor of the Longy Con­ser­va­tory Orches­tra and its artis­tic di­rec­tor of the en­sem­bles pro­gram. He has been the con­duc­tor of the Nor­folk New Mu­sic En­sem­ble since 2008.

He made his Carnegie Hall de­but last sea­son, per­form­ing with pi­anist Boris Ber­man, and has re­cently con­ducted the Orques­tra Sin­fon­ica de Porto Ale­gre, Brazil, the Royal Na­tional Scot­tish Orches­tra, the Hart­ford Sym­phony Orches­tra, the East­ern Con­necti­cut Sym­phony, the New Bri­tain Sym­phony and Bos­ton’s Di­nosaur An­nex En­sem­ble.

Pel­li­cano will lead the WSO in Pops, Sound­bytes, Con­certs for Kids, Spe­cials and in ed­u­ca­tional con­certs next sea­son.
