In 1981, Mark David Chapman was sentenced in New York to 20 years to life in prison in the shooting death of John Lennon the previous Dec. 8. Lennon gave Chapman his autograph only hours before the 25-year-old drifter shot him outside Lennon’s apartment building on New York City’s Upper West Side.
