FROM Oct. 25 to 27, Winnipeg’s French Quarter will play host to the Baroque RendezVous, a celebration of both the 275th anniversary of the construction of Fort Rouge by Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, Sieur de La Vérendrye, at The Forks in 1738 and the music of the day. Two historical re-enactment groups, Winnipeg’s La Compaigne de La Vérendrye and Montreal’s Le Canada de Louis XV, are joining forces to present a lineup of public events at various venues throughout St. Boniface. “Baroque describes the period of European art and music from about 1600 to 1750. Baroque music is what la Vérendrye would have heard in social gatherings in New France,” says Michel Loiselle, captain of La Compagnie de La Vérendrye in a press release. “To help us celebrate this time in history, we’ve brought in some of the most talented baroque musicians in Canada to play the music of renowned composers such as Lully, Couperin, Marais and Rameau.” The festivities begin Friday night with a baroque music concert at the PrécieuxSang Church, 200 Kenny St., featuring Montreal musicians Grégoire Jeay (flutist), MarieNathalie Lacoursière (voice and dance), Elin Söderström (viola da gamba) and Dorothéa Ventura (harpsichord). The program begins at 7:30 p.m.; tickets are $20 at the door. On Saturday night, history buffs can step back in time for an evening of 18th-century entertainment and dining at the Fort Rouge Banquet at Maison du Bourgeois. The event begins at 5:30 p.m.; tickets are $100. On Sunday, a baroque music and dance workshop will be held at the Centre culturel franco-manitobain at 2 p.m. Admission is $10.
