AL Simmons will be home for Christmas this year — and that’s good news for Manitoba Theatre for Young People and its patrons. The one-man vaudeville act is helping out the seriously indebted theatre company, which couldn’t afford the financial risk of a holiday show this year, by agreeing to perform Home for the Holidays there Dec. 21 and 22. Typically, MTYP’s December slot is filled by a big name show expected to sell a lot of tickets. “People have a tradition of going to MTYP for Christmas; I know we do as a family when I’m home,” says Simmons, who starred in one of the theatre’s holiday shows, A Year with Frog and Toad, in 2004. “It’s going to give them a Christmas show plus they are going to earn some money from it.” Simmons is already figuring out his list of skits, which will include his reenactment of ’Twas the Night Before Christmas. He’s also been rummaging through his props closet and planning to adapt his horsecycle into Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Santa’s sleigh. Home for the Holidays will be performed at 4 p.m. Dec. 21 and 1 p.m. the following day. Tickets are $20 and $15 for subscribers, while a family of four can go for $60.
