In the Footsteps of the Group of Seven
By Jim and Sue Waddington Goose Lane/ Art Gallery of Sudbury, $55 LONG before recreating old photos with contemporary snapshots became the rage, Ontarians Sue and Jim Waddington decided to find the rough tracts of landscape that had been immortalized by Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, starting in Killarney Provincial Park, near Sudbury, Ont. The idea was to photograph the precise landscapes the painters fixed to canvas in the early 1900s. That first snapshot in 1977 at Nellie Lake — of the hills captured in A.Y. Jackson’s undulating, sculpted strokes — began a 36-year expedition across Canada, culminating in this beautifully rendered book of hundreds of reproductions and photos. Side by side, the photos and the paintings bring home the greatness of the artists and the land. Evocative Canadiana, the book is a must this Christmas for the art lover in all patriots.
