A video exhibition of the Rocky Mountains by Icelandic artist and musician Ragnar Kjartansson opens at the Winnipeg Art Gallery Saturday for a three-month run. The gallery describes The End — Rocky Mountains as an experimental five-projection video presentation. Kjartansson initially produced The End for the Banff Centre, enlisting fellow Icelandic musician David Por Jonsson to assist. They don frontier attire and take musical instruments out into the winter cold to create songs that match the experience of the idyllic mountain landscapes. “This video conjures up age-old conceptions of the artist as a romantic, the duo parodying notions of the Wild West and themes of Icelandic folklore,” Paul Butler, the gallery’s curator of contemporary art, says in a release.
