“While working on an academic project awash with theoretical jargon, what has kept mme floating is Chris Raschka’s Cosmobiography of Sun Ra, a children’s picture book about the American jazz keyboardist and composer. The simple text offers a fairly factual account of Sun Ra’s life, but Raschka’s images turn those facts into something magical. Despite their often sombre colours, the images seem spontaneous, joyful — and very alive. Previously unaware of Sun Ra’s music, I downloaded some, and found myself listening to the aural equivalent of what these amazing pictures showed me: joy emerging from darkness. A great children’s picture book for adults. A great children’s picture book for children.”
