As al­ways, Board­walk Em­pire is beau­ti­fully pre­sented and de­lib­er­ately paced

Board­walk Em­pire even more in­trigu­ing is the way its writ­ers have cho­sen to fill in the miss­ing pieces of Nucky’s story, us­ing fre­quent flash­backs to his very dif­fi­cult child­hood to pro­vide in­sight into his mo­ti­va­tions and his in­evitable jour­ney into At­lantic City’s crim­i­nal un­der­world. The de­vice is used of­ten (at least in the first three episodes, which were pro­vided for pre­view), but not to the ex­tent that it dis­tracts from the circa-1931 sto­ry­line.
