CEO, The Forks North Portage Development “I have pulled out an old standby from my llibrary: Pierre Berton’s National Dream and The Last Spike. I have read this two-part bbook several times, and am still gobsmacked every time. The almost-naive confidence and toughness of the people that built this impossible railroad that united and formed Canada is a thrilling read. The men who looked at the Rocky Mountains and the bottomless swamps of northwestern Ontario and then said ‘I can build a railroad through there’ are inspiring. The key role that the people of Winnipeg and the Red River Colony played is encouraging, and demonstrates again that we as a community have the ability to punch well above our weight and pull off the impossible dream.”
