Cast of Heart of Robin Hood in­cludes Tony win­ner

TONY Award-win­ning per­former Gabriel Ebert will play the ti­tle role in the Cana­dian première of The Heart of Robin Hood, set to open Nov. 13 at the Royal Man­i­toba The­atre Cen­tre, it was an­nounced Fri­day. The Amer­i­can singer/ac­tor, who won a 2013 Tony for best ac­tor in a mu­si­cal for his work in Matilda the Mu­si­cal, heads a 21-mem­ber cast with Tony nom­i­nee Euan Mor­ton as Prince John. Izzie Steele will star as Mar­ion. Paul Essiem­bre is the only lo­cal in the lineup, which also in­cludes for­mer Win­nipeg­ger Richard Clarkin. Di­rected by Gisli Örn Gar­dars­son, The Heart of Robin Hood was writ­ten for the stage by David Farr. The pro­duc­tion had its Bri­tish première in 2011 and was seen at the Amer­i­can Reper­tory Theater in 2013. The stag­ing boasts swash­buck­ling, ac­ro­bat­ics, com­edy, drama, cross-dress­ing, trap doors and aerial work. The mu­si­cal fea­tures songs by the blue­grass-roots band Par­sons­field. Its five mu­si­cians per­form on stage dur­ing the pro­duc­tion. The pro­duc­tion first plays Win­nipeg Nov. 12-Dec. 6, prior to a Dec. 23-March run at Toronto’s Royal Alexan­dra The­atre.
