Day Trips

If St. Louis is the primary destination and you plan to stay several day, consider a day-trip to one or more of the outlying towns. Across the Missouri River, historic St. Charles boasts 10 blocks designated as a Nationally Registered Historic District. This is where Lewis and Clark set out in 1804 on their epic journey and replicas of their boats are on display at the Lewis and Clark Boat House and Nature Center. Between 1821 and 1826 St. Charles served as Missouri’s first capital and tours of the old capitol building are available. Walking down brick-lined Main Street is stepping back in history, although the old buildings house modern-day businesses — shops, restaurants, bed and breakfasts and even a technology company. About 100 kilometres south of St. Louis is Saint Genevieve, the oldest permanent settlement in Missouri. The town was founded in 1735 by French Canadians and a majority of the town
