Women win fenc­ing gold

Canada won gold in the women’s team foil fenc­ing com­pe­ti­tion with a 38-37 win over the United States on Satur­day at the Pan Amer­i­can Games.

The team of Cal­gary’s Alanna Goldie, Hamil­ton’s Eleanor Har­vey and Ot­tawa’s Kelleigh Ryan started strong be­fore hold­ing off a charge from the Amer­i­cans.

Up by one point head­ing into the fi­nal pair­ing, Har­vey matched Amer­i­can Ni­cole Ross with four hits to hang on for the vic­tory.

It was the first gold and sixth over­all medal for Canada’s fencers at the Games.

Mexico took bronze, de­feat­ing Venezuela 45-29 in the third-place match.
