Habi­tats must be pro­tected

Re: An­i­mal mag­netism at the zoo (Aug. 28)

It is heart­en­ing to read about Assini­boine Park Zoo’s en­dan­gered wildlife breed­ing ac­tiv­i­ties. How­ever, this im­por­tant re­minder of the dan­gers faced by an in­creas­ing num­ber of species is in­com­plete with­out a dis­cus­sion of the crit­i­cal role of habi­tat con­ser­va­tion. Zookeeper Bianca John­son’s quote says it all: “You need a cer­tain num­ber of these an­i­mals in a wild space for them to be able to find each other often enough to breed often enough to keep the ge­net­ics fresh enough to have a healthy pop­u­la­tion.”
