4 friends share $3.5M Lotto 6/49 windfall
It was a call that Ashok Prashar won’t soon forget.
When Prashar saw he had a voicemail message from Western Canada Lottery Corporation, he thought it was a reminder to renew the Lotto 6/49 subscription he shares with three close friends. But he was in for a surprise when he returned the call.
“We don’t call you for renewals,” the WCLC representative told him. “We call you when you’ve won.”
Prashar and his friends won $3.5 million in the Nov. 4 Lotto 6/49 draw. They shared the $7 million prize with a winning ticket in Ontario. The winning numbers were 1, 2, 6, 21, 22 and 33.
Prashar said he called his friends — Bhadresh Bhatt, Swatanter Parbhakar and Ravi Chhibba - right away. But he didn’t want to share the news over the phone and they arranged to get together.
“I thought he was going to ask for money to renew the subscription,” Chhibba joked.
“We didn’t know if there was something wrong,” said Parbhakar. “But we’ve been friends for years. If one of us needs something, we’ll be there.”
They met at a coffee shop, and Prashar wasted little time sharing the good news, like something out of a Lotto 6/49 ad.
“I just said, ’We won three and a half million dollars,” Prashar said.
“I asked if he was sure,” Bhatt said. “He gave me the number of the lady from WCLC and said to call her myself. She confirmed it — that’s when I believed him.”
The long-time friends said they haven’t had much time yet to consider what to do with their windfall.
The four and their wives have already been planning an Alaskan cruise.
“We’ll have lots of time to talk about it then,” Parbhakar said.
