Man charged in deadly accident
Nearly a year after an elderly woman was killed walking across Henderson Highway, Winnipeg police have announced charges against a 24-year-old man.
The collision occurred around noon on Dec. 18 when the 68-year-old woman crossed from the north side of Henderson in a westerly direction when a Chevrolet Silverado made a left, northbound turn from Kimberly Ave. and struck the woman.
On Monday, police made an arrest of the Winnipeg man and released him on a promise to appear.
Winnipeg police Const. Tammy Skrabek said the lengthy investigation was largely due to legal protocol and the Crown needing to determine whether the victim bore any responsibility in the collision.
Skrabek said even after extensive evidence was sent to the
Crown, there was still uncertainty on whether charges should be laid.
“It wasn’t a question of identity, it was really a question of the facts and do they compile an actual charge, or is this simply an accident?” she said.
