Advice from Toews can’t hurt

GANGNEUNG — Chay Genoway played high school and college hockey with Chicago Blackhawks captain and Olympic hero Jonathan Toews and remains close friends with the Winnipegger to this day.

So Genoway, a defenceman on this patchwork Team Canada, enlisted Toews to provide some inspirational words for his the team as the 2018 Olympic Games approached.

“He’s been able to give a little bit of advice on some of the things to expect going in,” Genoway said. “The best advice he gave me and the rest of the guys was to really enjoy the experience and not get too caught up in being hard on yourself about the game. And do all you can to win.”

Toews is a two-time Olympic gold medallist and three-time Stanley Cup champion, who would surely be here again had the NHL not pulled the plug.

“He’s a pretty good guy and a good friend of mine,” Genoway said. “I know he wishes he could be here. I know he’s happy that I get to be here along with the rest of the guys. I know he’ll be watching.”
